I feel like I’m literally the only person who feels like female / male / heterosexual / homosexual / transexual / black / white / asian / whatever character variety doesn’t matter unless it has something to do with the plot.
I personally like having character variety but if someone else doesn’t have any characters with variety you shouldn’t chastise them for it unless it has something to do with the plot of a story.
Yeah it sucks if a writer doesn’t have any female characters but unless it has something to do with the plot you’re arguing a moot point. Yeah it sucks if a writer only has heterosexual white males for characters but unless it has something to do with the plot you’re arguing a moot point.
Now if you have a plot that deals with homophobia, racism, sexism, or social injustice THEN you have a problem if all of your characters are heterosexual white males — but if the plot has nothing to do with that then …. what’s the point?
Yes it’s nice to have variety, but when the plot is about, say, for example the Apocalypse or some other kind of scenario that doesn’t have to do with social injustice or social equality — then it sort of has nothing to do with the plot so why are you fucking bothering?
